VasaMed: Wound Imaging and SmartDraw

Purpose of device:  Documentation of skin breakdown, ulcers and wound size
Main application: medical practices
Price range: Unknown

"Accurate, consistent and regular measurement and imaging of a wound is vital in objectively describing the progress of wound healing. Tracking wound size can assist in selecting and modifying treatment regimens.  Documentation of skin breakdown, ulcers and wound size is also important in terms of insurance coverage and litigation. It is standard practice to include monitoring the size of the wound at regular intervals. Wound measurement systems range from simple tape measure to complex imaging equipment.  To be clinically useful, wound measurement systems should be accurate and reproducible, permit quick assessment, use any camera, minimize the potential for contamination, and be cost-effective."

AccuVein AV400Vein

Purpose of device: Handheld Vein detailed imaging, use the skin as a screen
Main application: medical practices
Price range: Unknown

The AccuVein AV400 digitally displays a map of the vasculature on the surface of the skin in real time, allowing clinicians to verify vein patency and avoid valves or bifurcations. It is handheld and lightweight, weighing only 9.7 ounces (275g), and easily converts to hands-free with the use of optional wheeled or fixed stands. The medical grade design allows the device to be easily wiped clean, bagged for use in isolation, and does not require calibration as it is permanently aligned.  The easy to use AV400 can be held in any direction above the vein being viewed.  Universal and inverse modes make the AV400 useful on a variety of patient types. With center line accuracy to the width of a human hair, the AV400 can detect veins up to 10 mm deep.  More effective venipuncture procedures with less patient discomfort result in higher patient satisfaction, making it clear why many facilities have chosen to incorporate AccuVein into their standard of care.

Christie Medical: VeinViewer

Purpose of device: detail imaging of veins, uses the skin as a screen
Main application: medical practices
Price range: unknown

“VeinViewer projects an image much like a picture on a movie screen, but VeinViewer does this in real time making the patient’s skin the “screen”. Projected near-infrared light is absorbed by blood but reflected by surrounding tissue. We capture that information, process it, and project a digital image of the patient’s blood pattern within the vein directly on the surface of the skin. This patented technology, using AVIN™ (Active Vascular Imaging Navigation), is what allows us to do what no other device can.”

DermLite Famiy

Purpose of device: imaging of skin lesions on any body surface
Main application: medical practice
Price range: $495/995/1295
“DermLite I:To accomplish this feat, the designers squeezed a superb, full-size 15 mm lens that's optimized for

iPhone, high-powered LED lighting and a high-performance rechargeable battery into the simply ingenious DL1, an all-aluminum design smaller than your ring finger that lets you capture high-resolution images of excellent clarity and sharpness in both polarized and non-polarized modes, with or without skin contact.”
“DermLite II Pro is the most innovative, powerful, and by far most versatile portable dermoscopy tool to date. A groundbreaking, patented cross-polarization system is activated simply by depressing a button providing instant polarization control over lesion visualization. From superficial structures to deeper pigmentation, you see more detail at various depths than ever before. Along with a powerful lithium-ion rechargeable battery, and 32 bright-white LEDs (light emitting diodes), the DermLiteII Pro shatters the field.”

“The DL3 has been developed to be the tool of choice for the world's leading dermatologists. Precision-engineered and crafted from solid aluminum, it is the first handheld DermLite to integrate a 25 mm four-element lens, which offers greatly reduced optical distortion and a sharper image across the field of view. Twenty-one high-powered LEDs produce approximately 30 % more illumination in cross-polarized mode than the DermLite II HR, and seven non-polarized LEDs for immersion fluid dermoscopy create a brighter image than the equivalent mode in the DermLite II hybrid. For optimum ease of use, one button does it all: A quick tap instantly toggles between polarization modes, and a longer push turns the unit on  or off.”

NvisionVLE : 3mm deep at < 10 microns

Having received FDA appropriate clearances,NinePoint Medical is now making available in the U.S. its NvisionVLE esophageal tissue imaging system. The device provides a cross-sectional view of the tissue microstructure thanks to something called OFDI (optical frequency-domain imaging), a type of  Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT).

The NvisionVLE Imaging System enables physicians and pathologists to endoscopically view real-time, high-resolution, cross sectional images of organs and tissues up to 3mm deep at better than 10 micron resolution.

Instead of a balloon + rotary scanning motion, perhaps a portable flexible flat-rectangular scanner  ( 6cm x 6cm) could be developed for skin applications ?
